How do I create and grade a Canvas assignment?

Creating assignments on Canvas allows students to submit their work and teachers to grade assignments.

ICLS instructors are expected to give at least one Canvas assignment per week to DLI Classes.

To create an assignment on Canvas:

  • Sign into Canvas (include link) and choose a class from the Dashboard.
  • Click the "Assignments" tab on the left-hand side of the screen.
  • To create a new assignment, press the blue "+ Assignment" button on the top right-hand part of the screen.

To fill out the Assignment Information:

Please note that typically the assignment information should be filled out in the target language of the ICLS course.

  • Now, write the instructions of the assignment in the large box.

  • "Links" allows you to insert links into your assignment, where you can link to pages inside or out
  • "Image" upload an image
  • "Record/Upload Media" allows you to upload a media file (video, audio)
  • "Documents" file from computer

Point Information, Submission Type, and Due Dates:

  • Set a number of total points for the assignment
  • The submission type will always be "Online".
  • Always check off "File Upload" under "Submission Type". You might also choose to accept "Text Entry" and/or "Media Recording" submission types. "Text Entry" submissions are written answers that are typed and submitted directly through Canvas. "Media Recording" submissions might include images, audio files, or videos. Please note that the ICLS does not accept "Website URL" recordings.
  • Set a due date by clicking the calendar icon under the "Assign" category

Save & Publish vs Save

  • At any point while you are filling out your assignment description, you might chose to save your work and leave the page. To do this, click the blue "Save" button on the bottom right hand side of the page.
  • Once you have completed your assignment and you decide you want to make it accessible to students, click the "Save & Publish" button on the bottom right hand side of the page.
